A devoted student and teacher in the Himalayan Tradition for over 50 years, Rolf was widely admired for his warmth, clarity, and compassion. His presence was often described as calming and inspiring, and he touched the lives of thousands of students, colleagues, and spiritual seekers across the globe.
Rolf’s spiritual journey began in 1973 when he met his teacher, Swami Rama, whose guidance shaped the foundation of his lifelong dedication to meditation and the Himalayan Tradition.
Under Swamiji’s mentorship, Rolf undertook multiple trips to India, Nepal, and Tibet, deepening his understanding of spiritual practices and meditative disciplines.
Encouraged by Swami Rama to pursue academic study alongside his spiritual practice, Rolf completed doctoral studies in psychology and earned degrees in philosophy, music, Eastern studies, and clinical psychology, demonstrating a remarkable blend of scholarly rigor and spiritual insight.
In 1991, Rolf and his wife, Mary Gail, became co-directors of the Himalayan Institute of Buffalo, where he devoted twenty years to teaching hatha yoga, meditation, and philosophy around the world. During this time, he also served as the Institute’s Spiritual Director and continued studying the Himalayan Tradition under the guidance of Pandit Rajmani Tigunait.
In 2012, Rolf and Mary Gail relocated to the Institute’s headquarters in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, where Rolf served as president for ten years, overseeing educational programs, retreats, and initiatives that expanded the Institute’s reach and influence.
Rolf was also a gifted lecturer, writer, and author. He wrote Moving Inward and co-authored Yoga: Mastering the Basics, while regularly contributing to Yoga International and the Himalayan Institute’s online platform, HI Online.
His teachings often emphasized the practical application of ancient texts such as the Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita, inspiring students to refine their personal practice while exploring deeper philosophical insights.
